Kingman police officer wounded in deadly shooting

A police officer was wounded and a man was killed in an exchange of gunfire Thursday morning in Kingman.

Kingman Deputy Police Chief Rusty Cooper said the incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. as the officer was trying to serve a search warrant at a home in the 1700 block of Miami Avenue.

The gunfire exchange took place in the area of the front door of the residence, Cooper said.

Initial information indicates that 53-year-old Jeffrey Clair Cave of Kingman fired a weapon toward officers, and a police officer was shot, according to a news release from the Bullhead City Police Department, which is handling an independent probe of the officer-involved shooting,

Cave also was shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The officer, whose name and age were not immediately released, was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery and is listed in serious, but stable condition.

It is protocol to have an outside agency investigate an officer-involved shooting incident, the Bullhead City department said.
