With Las Vegas council’s OK, expansion can proceed for Golden Gate

The Golden Gate is proceeding with its expansion plans after earning approval Wednesday from the City Council.

Las Vegas' oldest casino is adding about 30,000 square feet to its existing property on Fremont and Main streets. CityCenter executive architect Gensler is designing the $12 million addition, which includes a five-story building with 16 suites -- a first for the Golden Gate -- a new hotel lobby and an upgraded deli that will be moved to the existing lobby area.

The shovel-ready project has one more step before getting under way: a building permit. Golden Gate co-owner Greg Stevens said he expects to start the expansion at the beginning of November.

Stevens, who owns the Golden Gate with brother Derek and Mark Brandenburg, said the upgraded facility will retain the Golden Gate's retro-Las Vegas style (and signs) with a contemporary twist. The Golden Gate's famous shrimp cocktail will remain on the menu.
