THE FAR EAST CONNECTION: A delegation from Nevada’s Tourism Commission has returned from China after observing the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the first licensed state tourism office there.

Since 2006, when tourism statistics on Chinese travelers were first tallied, Nevada has seen a 300 percent increase in visitation with 263,000 people arriving in 2012, the most recent complete year of data.

During the weeklong trip, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who heads the Tourism Commission, re-enacted a ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding that established the Nevada office in Beijing.

The group met with Chinese tourism industry leaders in Beijing, Chengdu and Guangzhou.

Nevada’s foray into China began in the late 1990s under Gov. Kenny Guinn and Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt-Bono. She viewed Chinese tourism as an economic driver for the state and shaped the state’s presence there with a series of tourism and trade missions.

The U.S. Commerce Department’s Office of Travel and Tourism Industries ranks China seventh in the number of visitors to the United States and sixth in the amount of money spent, averaging $6,000 per person, per trip.

Ten years after the signing of the deal with the Chinese, the Tourism Commission is looking to duplicate the effort in India, which has a similar economic profile to China in the early 2000s.

DRINK UP: Las Vegas-based Lion Fight Promotions, which stages Muay Thai fights, has signed a deal to make Singha Beer as Lion Fight’s official beer.

Singha Beer is the biggest and oldest brewery in Thailand, where Muay Thai is the national sport.

Michael Pine, recently hired by Lion Fight to find new sponsors and partnerships, brokered the beer deal. And one of the region’s top beer distributors, Nevada Beverage, reports that it’s now distributing Golden Road Brewing, a fast-growing craft brewery from Los Angeles. Golden Road produced 15,000 barrels last year and is expected to double that output this year.

Golden Road just finished filming an episode of “Brew Dog” on the Esquire Network. Meanwhile, Las Vegas-based Tenaya Creek, which is building a new production facility on Bonanza Road, is now being distributed by Wirtz instead of Nevada Beverage. And the region’s newest craft brewery, Bad Beat in the “Booze District” warehouse near Valley Auto Mall in Henderson, debuted July 11.
