Dusty Rhodes offers carnival of sound

Dusty Rhodes & the River Band's full-bodied rock 'n' roll recalls a time when music wasn't so rigidly codified, when genre distinctions were an afterthought at best. And so their violin and organ powered jams are refreshingly fluid and dimensionless.

Many of their tunes feel like raucous group singalongs, with Rhodes' hound dog yowl leading the way. Country, folk, R&B, even a taste of prog rock all become indivisible from one another in this band's sweaty hands. It's one big carnival of sound, a big top worth seeking out.

See Dusty Rhodes & the River Band at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Beauty Bar, 517 Fremont St. Tickets are $5; call 598-1965.
