Lady Gaga will perform tribute to David Bowie at Grammy Awards

LOS ANGELES — Lady Gaga will perform a tribute to David Bowie at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

The legendary musician died on Jan. 10 at age 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

The musical director for Gaga's tribute is Nile Rogers, whose history with Bowie dates back to the 1983 album "Let's Dance." Gaga has long-voiced her admiration for the musician, whose music greatly influenced her sound and aesthetic.

"We had already booked Lady Gaga on this year's show, but when David passed — almost in a single moment — we knew we had to change direction," said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammy Awards. "We immediately spoke and agreed that she should be the one to honor David. She's perfect for it. So I reached out to Nile and, before long, we were on our way to creating what we believe will not only make a great Grammy moment, but one fitting of David."

Ehrlich also told the New York Times that the tribute will likely last three or four songs and "is going to be a true homage to who David was, particularly musically, but not ignoring his influence on fashion and pop culture in a broader way."

The tribute will mark Gaga's fourth Grammys appearance. The six-time Grammy winner is nominated, alongside Diane Warren, for best song written for visual media for "Til It Happens to You." The song earned her a Golden Globe (on the same day that Bowie died) and an Oscar nomination.

Gaga joins previously announced performers that include Adele, Ellie Goulding, Kendrick Lamar, Little Big Town, Carrie Underwood and The Weeknd.

The 58th annual Grammy Awards will be hosted by LL Cool J for the fifth year in a row. The show will be broadcast live from Los Angeles' Staples Center on Feb. 15 at 8 p.m.
