Locals Only: Magical Forest gives way to new HallOVeen

Let’s face it, Halloween is pretty much the only holiday that’s all about taking.

“Give me some candy or I’ll mess up your house.” There’s a word for that on the other 364 days of the year.

Extortion.

This year, though, you can balance out some of that karma by giving back at HallOVeen.

Opportunity Village’s first foray into the spooky season continues through Sunday, 5-9 p.m. each day, at the Magical Forest, 6300 W. Oakey Blvd.

Usually reserved for Christmas, the Magical Forest has been repurposed for Halloween with attractions such as the Spooktacular Forest Express Passenger Train, the Slightly Scary Snowflake Slide and Boris the Elf’s 3-D Experience.

Other activities include nightly parades, crafts and movies.

Entry and unlimited rides are $19.99 for those ages 13 and older, $17.99 for ages 3-12. General admission is $11 for adults, $9 for children. Single rides or attractions are $3. Children 2 and younger are admitted free.

Proceeds benefit Opportunity Village, which serves people with intellectual disabilities through job training, employment, artistic and other programs.

‘Inside Out: From Vegas to Wales’

It’s a long way from Vegas to Wales, but American photographer Linda Alterwitz and British printmaker Ruth Thomas have bridged the gap. More than 20 years after the artists’ previous joint exhibition, they’re back together with “Inside Out: From Vegas to Wales” at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St., and will discuss their works at 6:30 p.m. Thursday during a reception that runs from 6 to 8 p.m. “Inside Out” continues on display from 12:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays through Dec. 28. Halloween treats class for children

Why should you do all the work? Here’s an opportunity for the kids to learn to make their own Halloween treats — a class from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Chocolate &Spice Bakery, 7293 W. Sahara Ave. Kids will learn how to decorate cake and marshmallow pops and sugar cookies. The $20-per-child tab includes refreshments; note that parents must stay for the whole class. Alice in Chains at Pearl at Palms
