Romantic comedies for him and her

Looking for movies to watch together on date night? We know it can be hard to find a romantic comedy that both guys and girls enjoy. That’s why we have come up with some excellent choices that have something both of you should like.

While You Were Sleeping

Some may say that this 1995 movie is dated, but the story is so witty and wonderful that you won’t be able to resist falling in love with it again and again.

When a young, public transportation token collector named Lucy saves the life of an attractive stranger who ends up in a coma, she pretends to be his fiancé and is swept up in his eccentric family dynamics.

This has got to be Sandra Bullock’s best performance in a romantic comedy. She is absolutely hilarious. Her character has this way of making you love her even more as she spreads her web of white lies in order to be a part of a family, something she has never had.

Bullock isn’t the only actor to steal the show. From the quirky grandmother to Lucy’s narcissistic landlord, the entire movie is full of super comedic moments. It doesn’t stop there, though. This is one of those movies that makes you want to hug all of the people you love after it is over, including the significant other sitting next to you on the couch.

On Ok.com, “While You Were Sleeping” has a 100 percent worth- your-time rating and is appropriate for ages 8+. It’s also available to stream instantly on Netflix.

Say Anything

No list of great romantic comedies is complete without including the 1989 classic “Say Anything.” If you, or your significant other, have not seen this, you need to fix that as soon as possible.

This movie stars John Cusak as an underachieving optimist determined to make a beautiful valedictorian fall in love with him. That becomes a little more difficult with her domineering father (John Mahoney) thwarting all of Lloyd’s plans.

This movie also has one of the most iconic romantic gestures in all of Hollywood. When Lloyd stands outside Diane’s window with a boom box blaring Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” you’ll understand why this movie is so great. Women will swoon and men will have no choice but to admire such conviction.

Although there is some profanity from many of the characters, the movie is rated PG-13 for a scene that takes place between the two teenagers in the back of a car. While nothing is showed explicitly, it is clear what happens between the couple. Despite this content, “Say Anything” is one of the most heartfelt romantic comedies, balanced with a healthy dose of light humor.

“Say Anything” is rated on Ok.com as appropriate for ages 14+ and a deceiving 67 percent worth-your-time. It’s also available to stream instantly on Netflix.

You’ve Got Mail

A delightful adaptation of “The Shop Around the Corner,” “You’ve Got Mail” from 1998 is a quaint movie that is perfect to cuddle up to and enjoy together. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, two bookstore owners, begin an online correspondence without knowing that they are actually falling in love with their biggest competitors.

Any movie that stars Hanks and Ryan together is sure to be great. The couple was also a hit in “Joe Versus the Volcano” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” but they are even better in “You’ve Got Mail.” These two actors just have a way of making you fall in love without even realizing it. They play such funny, romantic characters that are just so real and relatable, even though the people around them are pretty peculiar. If any of you men have ever complained about a male character in a romantic comedy, you will love Joe Fox.

You can’t talk about “You’ve Got Mail” without talking about the soundtrack. Packed full of classics, the music ranges from Louis Armstrong to The Cranberries, and every Harry Nilsson song will get you right in the feels.

“You’ve Got Mail” is one of those movies that will stick with you for quite a while, and it never gets old. With an age appropriate rating of 9+ and 94 percent worth your time, this has got to be your next date night flick.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are another one of those great movie couples that just make a romantic comedy so much better.

Andie Anderson (Hudson) and Benjamin Barry (McConaughey) are both caught up in their professional lives. Andie makes a deal to find a guy and break his heart in 10 days. Benjamin also makes a bet that he can make any woman fall in love with him in about that same amount of time. Unfortunately, they pick each other for their victims.

This 2003 movie is just about as funny as any romantic comedy can get. We all know girls that do the crazy things that Andie does, and we all know cocky guys like Ben. So when you put those kind of characters together, it’s no wonder that hilarity ensues.

However, the movie also shows what happens when two people are genuinely in love. Both guys and gals are sure to enjoy it.

“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” has a worth-your-time rating of 82 percent and is appropriate for ages 14+.

Music and Lyrics

If you loved “Notting Hill” or “Love Actually,” you will absolutely adore this movie. When a former pop star from the 1980s is asked to write a song called “A Way Back in to Love” for a contemporary teen pop star, he enlists the help of the woman who waters his plants. Alex creates the music while Sophie provides the lyrics, thus Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore spark harmonic genius.

There is an awesome ’80s band parody, and tons of VH1’s hits pop up throughout the 2007 movie that take you on a silly stroll down memory lane. Even if you don’t remember the ’80s, you can totally appreciate the exaggerations of the music industry that are included in this movie.

“Music and Lyrics” is somewhat unknown in the sea of romantic comedies, and it’s a shame because this movie is a great combination of everything that makes a romcom great. If you give it a chance, you are sure to love this movie and have a new favorite song to sing.

“Music and Lyrics” is 100 percent worth your time and appropriate for ages 13+.

Warm Bodies

Who would have thought that you could make a romantic comedy out of a zombie movie? Well, “Warm Bodies” from 2013 is just that. This is one romantic comedy that every guy likely will love more than his girl.

Told from the perspective of a zombie named R, “Warm Bodies” is extremely creative and fun to watch. It’s basically the story of Romeo and Juliet, except the Montagues eat brains. However, R is different and instead of eating Julie, he falls in love with her. I guess a zombie can still have a heart.

With zombies that have such human qualities and humans that have such destructive ones, this movie makes you wonder what it truly means to be human and how important love can be.

“Warm Bodies” has an 86 percent worth-your-time rating and is appropriate for ages 14+.
