LOS ANGELES — “Terminator Genisys” is supposedly rewriting the rules of the enduring action franchise, and the newly released trailer certainly makes good on that promise, offering a deeper look at the plot of the Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster before its July 1 debut.

The new footage has plenty of throwbacks to some of the franchise’s most memorable iconography in its opening moments, before shifting gears and spotlighting Jason Clarke’s John Connor as we’ve never seen him before, raising the stakes for Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor and her time-traveling partner Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney).

The film hails from Paramount and Skydance Pictures and is directed by Alan Taylor.
