Fishing Report, July 5

■ LAKE MEAD - Anglers are beginning to see a few striper boils, but the best bite is taking place on cut anchovies fished deep. Those hoping to avoid the heat are finding success for catfish and stripers at night. Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are keeping anglers busy in the Overton Arm.

■ LAKE MOHAVE - Striper action remains sluggish for anglers fishing in the Cottonwood Cove area and south toward Katherine Landing, though the coves are starting to give up a few fish. One lucky angler caught a 28½-inch striper that weighed in at nearly 7½ pounds while still-fishing with cut anchovies. Catfish are hitting baits fished on the bottom, mostly at night, and panfish are biting in the coves. Largemouth and smallmouth bass action remains good in the morning and late afternoon. Trout fishing is good following Friday fish plants at Willow Beach.

■ LAUGHLIN - Anchovies fooled a hefty rainbow caught in the Big Bend area. Harbor master Rusty Braun at the Riviera Marina said the fish tipped the scales at 4.8 pounds and measured nearly 23 inches long. Anglers also are catching striped bass, largemouth bass and catfish as large as 7 pounds.

■ LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS - Anglers continue to find fair to good fishing for bluegill at the urban ponds. Suspend a red worm, mealworm or fly below a bobber, and fish the edges of the grass beds. Fish shallow in the early morning and late afternoon, and go deep during heat of the day. Catfish generally feed near the bottom. Hot dog slices and night crawlers generally are productive. The limit is three fish.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Big and ugly - that seems to be the ticket at Sunnyside, where the bass bite has turned on. Soft plastics have been catching the fish, some in the 5- and 6-pound class. Crappie have come out of nowhere to offer anglers another option, and the bite has been good in recent days. Trout fishing is slow.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Anglers continue to find good fishing for rainbow and tiger trout. The fish have been hitting a variety of small spinners and lures as well as traditional baits such as red worms and PowerBait in green and rainbow color variations.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - Stocked rainbows and crappie, along with largemouth bass, are providing anglers with good fishing opportunities. Small white jigs are taking the crappie, while the trout are biting on PowerBait, worms and flies.
