Lone Mountain — the mountain, not the road — could be closed for a year

Lone Mountain will be even lonelier in the coming months.
Clark County has blocked access to the entire mountain in the northwest valley to allow for the development of a new trail and other park amenities there.
A construction fence went up around the base of the small mountain last week and is expected to stay there for up to 12 months, said county spokesman Dan Kulin.
When work is finished, the mountain will be encircled by a 10-foot-wide, 2.1-mile trail for joggers, hikers and horses. The area needed to be fenced to keep people away from the active construction site, Kulin said.
“If the trail gets done earlier, which we expect it will, the fence will come down earlier,” Kulin said.
The trail work is part of an almost $7 million addition to Lone Mountain Regional Park that includes a covered horse-riding arena, two round horse pens, a picnic area, an equestrian-themed playground and parking.
The new development on a triangle of vacant county land at the foot of the mountain will connect two parts of the regional park now separated by homes — the older Lone Mountain Discovery Park and a sports complex that opened in 2013.
The work is being paid for with a mix of county capital funds, Residential Construction Tax revenue and a portion from proceeds from sale of federal land in the valley.
