Union Pacific train derails in North Las Vegas

Union Pacific Railroad was set to clean up a small amount of potentially hazardous materials that leaked from a couple of tankers after a train derailed in North Las Vegas early Saturday morning.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which was reported at 12:32 a.m. at the intersection of Donovan Way and Tropical Avenue. The residential area did not need to be evacuated, according to a North Las Vegas Fire Department press release.

The North Las Vegas, Clark County and Las Vegas fire departments were able "to identify, isolate and contain the spill" within 45 minutes of arriving on scene. Officials said "alcohol" and "fatty substances" were two of the substances that leaked from the derailed cars. The train also was carrying lumber.

The cause of derailment is under investigation, and no damage estimate was available, a fire official said.

In all, four train cars derailed, including two tankers and two box cars.
