28-year-old slaying suspect pleads not guilty

A 28-year-old man accused of slaying a woman in September 2008 pleaded not guilty to murder charges last week, according to District Court records.

Khalfani Howard was arrested in November in San Bernardino, Calif., after a yearlong investigation in the death of Helena Haley, 22, who was found in a downtown trash bin in 2008, Las Vegas police said.

Haley's body was covered with cuts and bruises and had been stuffed in a trash can in a parking lot on the northwest corner of Carson Avenue and Eighth Street.

The Clark County coroner's office could not determine the exact cause of death, but did not rule out asphyxiation.

According to the police report, Haley, a North Carolina native and mother of three, was in a relationship with Howard.

Jail and court records indicate Howard is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $200,000 bail.

A trial date was set for Oct. 18.
