AAA to close six Southern Nevada locations
February 25, 2009 - 5:01 pm
AAA Nevada said Wednesday it will close six Southern Nevada locations and two in Northern Nevada, eliminating 50 positions.
AAA spokeswoman Jenny Mack did not have information about how many of the eliminated positions are now staffed.
AAA announced the closing of 17 offices in Northern California, Utah and Nevada, eliminating a total of 250 positions. Another 50 open jobs will not be filled in the three states.
“This reduction is part of a long-term plan to reduce expenses to stay competitive,” Mack said. “The current state of the economy does not help. These are always difficult decisions.”
She declined to describe the kind of severance being offered to displaced workers.
Even after the closings, AAA has 30 percent more locations than it did five years ago in the area, she said.
The group continues to expand services to its 300,000 Nevada members through call centers and the Internet, she said. The AAA call center in Las Vegas, which employs 475 workers, is not affected by the layoffs, she said.
Many of the offices marked for closing provided a range of services, including insurance sales, travel assistance and other membership services.
Most of the affected branches will close March 27. After the closures, 11 branches will remain in Nevada.
The Las Vegas locations being closed are at 8174 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Suite 115; 111 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite 130; 4965 S. Fort Apache Road, Suite 105; and 6510 N. Buffalo Drive, Suite 130.
Also, AAA will shut the North Las Vegas office at 5465 Simmons St., Suite 1, and the Henderson office at 72 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Suite 135.
