Amazon turns another e-reading page with new Kindle DX

Digital reading is growing up, or at least one of its most famous devices is. Amazon.com unveiled the KindleDX reader this morning, a new unit with a screen that's 2½ times larger than the Kindle2. Amazon.com’s Web site says the new gadget will be available this summer.
The DX looks like an oversized Kindle2, but it has a couple of different features, including an accelerometer that automatically changes the view from portrait to landscape when the gadget’s rotated 90 degrees. The new device also has native support for portable document format (PDF) files. By contrast, the Kindle2 requires users to convert files through an Amazon service to use them.
The DX will sell for $489, but pricing is expected to be lower when someone buys it with a long-term subscription to The New York Times, The Washington Post or The Boston Globe, New York Times Co. Vice President of Circulation Ray Pearce said today at the Digital Publishing Alliance meeting in Columbia, Mo. Details of the bundled subscription pricing haven't been released.
