County passes limit of four garage sales every six months

Some Clark County residents set their alarms to be the first to hit neighborhood garage sales. Some pick up their phone and call their commissioner to complain about them.

Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said he is most familiar with the latter. That is why he sponsored a new ordinance that reduces the number of garage sales a resident can host every six months from six to four.

"Once size does not fit all," Weekly told two residents who appeared at Tuesday's meeting to oppose the ordinance. "Lots of residents have turned these garage sales into personal businesses."

Commissioners agreed with Weekly and voted 6-0 to pass the new law. Tom Collins was absent for the vote.

Glenn Campbell, the publisher of a flier called Family Court Chronicles, complained that some residents might need extra money and rely on garage sales for some quick cash. He said others who are moving might need more than two weekends to get rid of their belongings.

"Las Vegas is a city with world-class entertaining, world-class gaming and world-class garage sales," said Campbell, whose comments generated little concern but a few giggles from commissioners.

"Leave the power to the people to have garage sales."
