New welfare office opens in Las Vegas
Nevada has a new welfare office in Las Vegas.
The new office, located at 3965 S. Durango Dr., was opened Monday by the state's Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, state officials announced late Tuesday.
The office, with 55 workers, will determine eligibility for people applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps, and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
The workers will also provide case management for those services in addition to processing eligibility for Medicaid and Nevada Check Up applicants.
"This expansion is great for our clients and staff," said Kathy Zamecki, the new office manager, in a news release Tuesday. "Having a new office in this area will allow easier access to benefits for our clients."
The state's division received approval this past legislative session to hire an additional 72 staff members between October and January 2016, and 17 more in October 2016 to handle the increased caseload, according to the news release.
