Tony McCormick funeral set today

Tony McCormick Jr. was remembered this week as a civil rights activist eager to help those in need.
"He always seemed so professional and businesslike, always doing things for people," longtime family friend Joyce McDonnell said. "He was very well-known in the community during his time."
McCormick died Aug. 21 of complications from diabetes. He was 75.
His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Vegas View Church of God in Christ, 1906 Glider St., North Las Vegas.
McCormick moved to Las Vegas in 1958 and immediately became active in community affairs and public service.
In 1970, then-Gov. Michael O'Callahan appointed him executive secretary.
McCormick worked as a deputy state labor commissioner and went on to become secretary of the state Labor Commission in 1985.
In 1983, McCormick pleaded guilty to a charge involving the misuse of public money. He received probation.
McCormick was named chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Housing Authority in 1987.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra and Cynthia Ann, both of Las Vegas; a brother, James Richard of Ayer, Mass; a sister, Helen, of Conway, S.C.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
