Padres, ex-Royals pitcher James Shields agree on 4-year deal

The San Diego Padres reached an agreement with free agent right-handed starting pitcher James Shields on a four-year contract, according to multiple reports Monday.

SB Nation reported Shields’ deal, pending a physical, is worth between $72 million and $78 million. The deal includes a club option for a fifth year, a source told ESPN.com.

Shields, 33, had a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA, 180 strikeouts and just 44 walks in 227 innings for the Kansas City Royals last season.

Shields, who grew up near San Diego, made $13.5 million in 2014. He has a career 114-90 record and 3.72 ERA over nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Royals.

Shields has a 3-6 record and 5.46 ERA in the postseason. He lost both of his starts in the 2014 World Series against the San Francisco Giants.
