Horse Racing: Today at Los Alamitos, July 4

Post Time 2:15 p.m.

Race 1 - 5 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

6 Surfside Tiara - FTS from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; note that he is using Martin Garcia, stable rider for Bob Baffert.

3 Wish I Understood - Meanwhile, this FTS from Bob Baffert has David Flores up; Flores has had a difficult time re-establishing himself.

Long Shot - 1 Undisputed

Race 2 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $14,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

1 Tempetuous - No fear using Cheryl Charlton here at Los Alamitos; this is her home track and she rides it like she owns it.

8 Awe Gee - Tepid chalk sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; blinkers off for trainer Caesar Dominguez.

Long Shot - 5 Warrensdollarsigns

Race 3 - 5 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

3 Passau - Made her debut on the grass at Belmont Park; interesting that he shows up at Los Alamitos running over the main dirt track.

7 Navy Hymn - FTS from the productive Doug O’Neill barn; you never know when you are going to see a good thing pop at first asking.

Long Shot - 5 Quantum Force

Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Avo - Ed Freeman has made a mark this first week at Los Alamitos; taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming.

9 Claudita - Don’t mind the parking lot post as the outside has not been too bad; could show a lot of early speed and provide a target.

Long Shot - 1 Express Checkout

Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

1 Turnover - Trainer Bob Baffert has always supported this Los Alamitos meet; this recent graduate showed promise at Del Mar.

6 Curly Road - Had to drop for a maiden claiming $75K price to graduate; still not bad since the gap to MSW is not that great.

Long Shot - 7 Karma King

Race 6 - 5 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

4 Xingontothebone - Gets class relief from the Santa Anita Juvenile for this; has speed to sit a perfect trip pillar to post.

11 Scatastic - Trainer John Brocklebank has brought a bevy of 2-year-olds to SoCal to run; this one was very well bet in his career debut.

Long Shot - 8 Tribal Roar

Race 7 - 1 mile, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Mucho Blessings - Can’t get around picking so many chalk horses on the card; many races break down between the haves and the have nots.

8 Class Divine - Has much of 2-turn experience so that can only help; ran for the bottom once at Santa Anita, the bottom here is lower.

Long Shot - 9 Goose Bumps

Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles, $350,000 Los Alamitos Derby, 3-year-olds

2 Gimme Da Lute - You could throw a sombrero over the three favorites, they are that close; gutsy win last out in the Affirmed.

4 Kentuckian - Destroyed and overmatched group in the Laz Barrera last out; tries 2-turns for the first time which is a big difference.

Long Shot - 5 Prospect Park

Race 9 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

8 Lady Now - Could have a “lady” exacta box if I am correct; Bobby Wayne Grayson barn has its moments, chance for a small upset here.

6 Lady Dish - The finale is the most difficult race on the program; none of these horses has a killer instinct, but one will be a winner.

Long Shot - 9 Beyond Lucky

Best Bet - 1 Turnover (race 5)

Los Alamitos Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/5/$39.80; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60

Los Alamitos Totals - 29/9/$55.40; Long Shots, 15/1/$7.80; Best Bets, 2/1/$3.60

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #7 Kharafa (4/1) in race 11 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Women Win ran second at Belmont Park paying $2.70 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 91/62/$467.60; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
