Mountain’s Edge to host 5K race

More than 5,000 Southern Nevadans will walk and run to fight heart disease and stroke during today's American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk and Run.

People of all ages are affected and the 5K event inspires participants to build stronger, healthier lives for themselves and their communities and raise needed funds for research and programs. Heart disease and stroke are the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers and Nevada's No. 3 and No. 4 killers.

Start! Heart Walk and Run takes place at Exploration Park near the entrance to the Mountain's Edge master-planned community in southwestern Las Vegas at Buffalo Drive and Blue Diamond Road.

People can still participate in the race and walk with onsite registration between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and a $35 entry fee. General registration starts at 7 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. and the race and walk at 8:30 a.m.

For information or to donate, visit lasvegasheartwalk.org call 540-8824.

To draw attention to the effect of heart disease and stroke, two speakers will share their stories during opening ceremonies. Survivor Sabrina Congioloso will recount how her two young sons were both born with heart defects and stroke survivor David Dow, now 25, will talk about his experience after having a stroke when he was 10 years old.

Family-friendly activities begin at 9:30 a.m., including free health screenings, Ask the Expert, Survivor Pavilion, treasure hunt, and Heart and Stroke Heroes ceremony. Educational offerings cover learning to lower risk factors and building a healthier lifestyle and learning how to quit smoking. The Kids Zone features face painting, rock walls and bounce houses. There will be pet-friendly areas, entertainment, heart-healthy snacks and promotions and giveaways by Mountain's Edge builders. Subway is providing free sandwiches for the first 1,000 people.

American Heart Association research has contributed to important innovations, such as CPR, pacemakers, bypass surgery, heart-lung machine, surgical techniques to repair heart defects, and life-extending drugs like clot-busters. These and other advances are making it possible for many people to call themselves survivors.

Start! Heart Walk and Run is nationally sponsored by Subway restaurants. Local sponsors include: Pfizer, NV Energy, Mountain's Edge, Medco, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nevada, Freeman, Nevada State Bank, Healthcare Partners of Nevada, Cricket Wireless, International Game Technology, the University of Phoenix, Boyd Gaming Corp., Las Vegas Review-Journal, CBS Radio, City National Bank, Good Sheppard Rehabilitation and Word and Brown.

Mountain's Edge consistently has ranked in the country's top five best-selling master-planned communities by RCLCO, a leading independent real estate advisory firm. Builders include Amstar Homes, Beazer Homes, Camden Homes, Discovery Homes, Harmony Homes, KB Home, Lennar, Meritage Homes, Pardee Homes, Pulte Homes, Richmond American Homes, Ryland Homes, StoryBook Homes, and Woodside Homes. Many are offering new models, special programs and incentives.

For example, Ryland Homes' Augusta community has three new one- and two-story floor plans with amenities and room options.

The plans range from 2,400 to 3,039 square feet and are priced from $235,990.

StoryBook Homes has paid off the special improvement district fees at its Trissino community, eliminating that cost for homeowners, and its $66 homeowners association fee includes front-yard maintenance.

The floor plans are Energy Plus New Homes and include granite slab countertops, electric car charging station prewire, beechwood cabinets and 9-foot first floor ceilings.
