MOVIES: A Bond … and a beer

So much for popcorn and soda. Or even a vodka martini — shaken, not stirred.
Starting Friday, Galaxy Theatres' 14-screen Cannery multiplex adds beer to its concession lineup after 6 p.m. in selected theaters — one showing the new 007 adventure, "Quantum of Solace," the other showing the Samuel L. Jackson-Bernie Mac comedy "Soul Men." Beer only will be served in select theaters — and only guests 21 and older will be allowed in the theaters serving beer.
Galaxy president Rafe Cohen predicts "moviegoers will appreciate the service and it will provide them with yet another reason to choose Galaxy Cannery."
Maybe that's because North Las Vegas residents now have a choice where to see movies, with Friday's grand opening of Regal's 16-screen Aliante Station providing new competition for Galaxy's Cannery in the North Las Vegas area. (Both theaters offer all-digital projection; the Cannery was the first all-digital theater in Southern Nevada.)
Another signal of the new North Las Vegas competition: Galaxy Cannery's "Customer Appreciation Weekend," during which patrons will receive a free 85 oz. popcorn with every ticket purchased starting noon Friday and ending Sunday.
And if you're one of the first 500 ticket holders in line to see "Quantum of Solace" at 11:59 p.m. at the Cannery, you'll receive a free T-shirt.
If you miss out on the Cannery's T-shirt giveaway, however, fear not.
Aliante Station's also handing out "Quantum of Solace" shirts — to those buying the first 100 tickets at the box office Friday through Sunday. And, to celebrate Aliante Station's grand opening, Regal's springing for a free popcorn and soft drink with each paid admission Friday through next Thursday.
