Summerlin celebrates National Trails Day with family event

The six-week Summerlin Adventure Days campaign concludes on National Trails Day, June 6, with the Happy Trails Family Fun Run/Walk. This event is free and open to the public. It's a family-friendly activity designed to encourage residents of all ages to experience Summerlin's award-winning trail system in honor of National Trails Day.

The 1.6-mile walk begins and ends at Tree Top Park (600 Sagebury Drive). Participants will travel along The Arbors Paseo Park trail system to and from The Arbors Tennis & Play Park (610 Sagebury Drive).

A variety of family-friendly games and activities is planned for all ages at The Arbors Tennis & Play Park, including sack races, a water balloon toss, hula hoop and dance competitions, 9 to 11 a.m.

For the more advanced athlete, there is a 9-mile fun run coordinated by the Summerlin Striders, a Summerlin-based running club. The run begins at 6 a.m. at The Trails Park (1910 Spring Gate Lane) and travels south along the trail system on Town Center Drive to The Mesa Park (5401 Mesa Park Drive). The course starts near the northern border of Summerlin and travels toward the southern edge of development, showcasing the community's extensive 150-mile trail system that runs through all developed portions of the community from the north to the south as well as from the east to the west.

The Summerlin trail system includes five types of planned trails: street-side, village, bike, regional and natural. A description of the various trail types and a map of Summerlin's trail system is available online at summerlin.com or at The Trails, The Gardens or The Willows Community Centers.

"There isn't another master-planned community in Las Vegas with a trail system comparable to Summerlin's," said Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.

"It connects neighborhoods to parks, schools, shopping centers, houses of worship and dozens of other amenities. You can literally get almost anywhere in Summerlin by walking, running, skating or cycling on its trails."

National Trails Day was originally established in 1993 and has grown to include about 3,000 trail-themed events across the country. The day was established to promote public awareness and appreciation for America's trails.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with about 9,000 acres still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan, including the community's urban core of Summerlin Centre.

The community has about 95,000 residents.

Amenities include more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 23 public and private schools and nearly 100 actively selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the upper $100,000s to more than $2 million.

Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s.

Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
